  • Identify optimal fat intake for a healthy balance of dietary fat intake and caloric expenditure to improve overall health and athletic development.
  • Determine proper hydration for the exercising child and adolescent athlete to guarantee optimal sports performance and avoidance of adverse health problems.
  • Recognize and disseminate clinical considerations that may exist for coaches and trainers when working with children and adolescent athletes who may have type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Distinguish the nutritional and psychological components for healthy weight loss for athletes who are prone to wide fluctuations in body weight in and out of their sports season.
  • Identify the most common nutritional supplements taken by youth, how they affect the body, and the potential ergogenic effects and safety concerns for young athletes.

The Role of an AFPA Certified Youth Nutrition Specialist:

  • Assists young clients and family members in healthy eating habits and meeting their athletic and sports performance goals.
  • Offer a sound performance nutritional plan.
  • Advise and present a balanced nutritional strategy that leads to optimal health and performance.
  • Offers nutritional plans for specific weight maintenance goals, weight loss or weight gain goals, and athletic or sports events and training.

Completion Time:

  • Self-paced, self-study, complete your course within 6 months or less 
  • After successful completion, you will earn the title of “Certified Youth Nutrition Specialist”

Requirements for enrollment:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Desire to help others in obtaining their nutritional and sports performance goals
  • Nutrition & Wellness Consultant Certification, or similar, strongly recommended 

Exam Requirements:  

  • Passing an online exam with 85% or higher.
  • Exam is based on the course materials.  No added materials needed.
  • There are 100 exam questions.
  • The examination must be completed within 28 days of receipt of your testing link.
  • Once you submit your examination for grading and pass, you will receive your grade and credentials immediately.
  • If you do not pass, there is a $75.00 retest fee. You will be allowed to retest within 24 business hours.
