Expanded Discussion Topics:

Dr. Gundy’s The Plant Paradox Is Wrong
If lectins are bad, then beans would be the worst, and soy bean counters would presumably find that bean eaters cut their lives short, whereas the exact opposite may be true with legumes (beans, split peas, chickpeas, and lentils), found to be perhaps the most important dietary predictor of survival in older people in countries around the world. As Dan Buettner points out in his Blue Zones work, lectin-packed foods “are the cornerstones of” the diets of all the healthiest, longest-lived populations on the planet. Plant-based diets in general, and legumes in particular, are a common thread among longevity Blue Zones around the world, the most lectin-lush food there is.

Fighting Autism Brain Inflammation
Sulforaphane is not made in chemical plant; it’s made by a plant. Sulforaphane is made by broccoli, kale, cabbage, collards, and cauliflower, in other words, cruciferous vegetables.  Providing broccoli to those with autism, may  make things better by boosting the heat shock proteins.

Does Cell Phone Radiation Cause Cancer?
Cell phone radiation isn’t like nuclear radiation; it doesn’t damage DNA directly, like gamma rays from an atomic bomb or something. It does appear to be able to damage DNA indirectly by generating free radicals.

Efficacy and Safety of Probiotics
What about probiotic supplements? I’ve talked about the potential benefits, but there appears to be publication bias in the scientific literature about probiotics. This is something you see a lot with drug companies, where the sponsor, the supplement company paying for their own probiotic research, may not report negative results, not publish it, as if the study never happened. And so, then, we the doctors just see the positive studies.

Prevent Common Childhood Infections
A half-teaspoon of nutritional yeast worth of beta-glucan in children who suffered from like repeated respiratory infections, and after a month, found a significant increase in salivary lysozyme levels, compared to control.  The researchers conclude that by giving kids the yeast beta-glucans, we “could decrease the incidence and severity of infectious illness during the cold [and] flu season,” and thereby benefit the parents as well.
